Welcome to the January 2026 release of Visual Studio Code. In this release, we are further evolving VS Code to make it the home for multi-agent development. This release includes improvements in chat UX, agent session management, agent customization, agent extensibility, agent optimizations, agent security & trust, workbench & productivity, terminal enhancements, coding & editor, and extensions & API. Notable features include message steering and queueing, agent hooks, Claude compatibility, use skills as slash commands, support for slash commands in background agents, and Kitty keyboard support. The release also introduces interactive Mermaid diagrams in chat responses, an Ask Questions tool, a revamped Plan agent, and enhanced terminal command output. Additionally, there are new experimental VS Code Light and Dark themes, and improvements in agent session management, including switching and delegating between agent types.
